Pertencem à Geração Sandwich (GS) indivíduos que prestam simultaneamente cuidados
a duas gerações distintas, tais como filhos e pais. Apesar de se tratar de uma geração com uma
sobrecarga elevada a nível físico como psicológico, existem aspetos positivos no cuidado
multigeracional. Trata-se e um grupo crescente, mas ainda pouco investigado, principalmente em
relação aos aspetos positivos de cuidar. Atualmente estes cuidadores confrontam-se com a
prestação de cuidados em contexto pandemia COVID-19, que tem exacerbado medos no mundo
inteiro e exigido distanciamento físico entre familiares. Esta investigação pretende avaliar aspetos
positivos do funcionamento psicológico de cuidadores informais pertencentes à geração sandwich
e descrever o impacto psicológico do contexto da pandemia nos cuidadores GS.
Participaram no estudo 15 cuidadores pertencentes à GS (12 do sexo feminino e 3 do sexo
masculino). Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevista semiestruturada com questões
sobre: cuidados prestados aos filhos, cuidados prestados aos idosos, experiência de vitalidade
subjetiva, impacto da situação de pandemia e ganhos do cuidado multigeracional. Foi realizada
uma análise qualitativa dos mesmos.
Os resultados forneceram importantes indicadores do funcionamento psicológico positivo
dos cuidadores da geração sandwich, tendo, igualmente, sido identificadas dificuldades como é o
caso da necessidade de apoio, tanto a nível governamental como a nível familiar, mas também os
inúmeros ganhos e aspetos positivos que esta geração tem ao cuidar, como é o caso da maior união
familiar, satisfação em cuidar e os exemplos familiares e aprendizagens que advém do cuidado
multigeracional.The Sandwich Generation is a group of individuals who simultaneously provide care to
two different generations, be they children and parents. Although it’s a generation with a high
burden, both physically and psychologically, there are positive aspects in multigenerational
care. This is a group who is increasingly present in the world, however, few studies have
explored the this kind of caregivers and, specifically, the positive aspects of caring. Currently
these caregivers are faced with the provision of care in the context of the pandemic COVID-19,
that has exacerbated fears worldwide, leading to high levels of fear and the demand of social
distancing between relatives. The present study aims to evaluate the positive aspects of the
psychological functioning of informal caregivers belonging to the sandwich generation and,
also, to describe the psychological impact of the pandemic context on the caregivers of these
generation.
Participated in the present research 15 adult caregivers (12 women and 3 males). Data
was collect through a semi-structured interview with questions about: care provided to
children, care provided to elderly, Subjective vitality experience, impact of the pandemic
situation and gains of multigenerational care. A qualitative analysis of the data was made.
These results provided important indicators of the positive psychological functioning
of sandwich generation caregivers, having also been identified difficulties as it is the need for
support, both at governmental level and family level, but also but also the countless gains and
positive aspects that this generation has when caring, as is the case of greater family unity,
satisfaction in caring and the family examples and learning that come from multigenerational
care
